Collecting Antique Telescopes

One of the most interesting reasons to collect antique telescopes is because they allow you to see the world and the skies in the same way as our ancestors would. The instruments that are considered to be antiques now, were at the height of technological sophistication in their time.

They were widely used by astronomers, sailors and the military. Original optics and brass tubes were very fragile and easy to dent, which is why not many of them are to be found today.

The telescope was a vital piece of equipment of any naval voyage in the older days. The most common antique telescopes were the smaller hand-held variety, used by mariners. This type of telescope (called the 'spyglass') featured complex optics which allowed the image to be seen 'right side up', compared to astronomy telescopes which inverted the image.

The spyglass was focused by moving the tubes back and forth in order to focus the image. The instrument would typically be collapsible with 3 or 4 sections folding into one, for ease of storage. The more sections the spyglass was made up of, the more fragile it was.

For durability, sailors used the two section variety known as the single draw. These were most commonly made of brass, with leather or wood coverings. Other antique telescopes can be found made from nickel silver or silver plate. Solid wood tubes are rare to find and would indicate a very early model.
