Antique Trunks and Luggage

A luggage trunk or travelling chest is a large rectangular container for transporting clothing or other personal belongings. They were typically used for long periods of stay away from home, such as travel trips or boarding school. These days trunks are generally used as pieces of decorative storage or display furniture for things like books or military paraphernalia.

Antique trunks date from 1600's - early 1900's. Made with different patterns, details and designs, antique trunks can be of historic significance to many collectors.

Animal hide or leather covered trunks can be traced back to 1600's. They are fastened by lots of small brass tacks. They always feature leather-trimmed edging, dust banding and forged metal carrying handles. These trunks wear quite well over time and have an elegant appearance.

Stagecoach trunks go back from 1840 to 1875. Instead of animal hide covering and leather trim, antique trunks in this period were often made with oil cloth, tooled or inked leather, or paper. Their appearance is accentuated by bigger brass-covered buttons.

From 1870 to 1920, dome top trunks soared in popularity. They came in a variety of sizes and styles. Their most distinctive feature, as the name suggests, is the domed top lid that slopes in both directions. Constructed with a moulding technique called barrel moulding, trunks made during this period always had more details and eye-catching embellishments than their earlier leather and stagecoach counterparts.
