Collecting Antique Firearms Vintage pistols, rifles and other long guns can be extremely valuable amid historians, gun enthusiasts and collectors alike. Generally speaking, antique arms are considered to be weapons produced before the 20th Century. Although opinion varies among weapons experts, The Boer War is widely considered to be the cut-off point for most collectors. Earlier varieties of firearms include muzzle-loading guns such as the musket pistol, musket rifle and blunderbuss. These weapons used black gunpowder as the primary propelling agent and the ammunition consisted of lead bullet. Genuine muzzle-loading rifles made circa 1900s can fetch a high price at specialist auctions or online markets. Many cartridge-firing guns can be considered antiques, providing that the cartridge and calibre are obsolete or no longer in production. An example would be the 1836 Brunswick percussion rifle, which fired the .704 calibre round. Various versions of the early Enfield rifle starting from Pattern 1851 to the magazined Lee-Enfield variety of 1895 can be classified as antique rifles. When collecting or valuing the weapons, the first step would be to identify if the item is an authentic piece. Start by visiting history museums to see what genuine articles look like. Watch out for identifying features and marks unique to the guns. It is also worth researching some of the gunsmiths and manufacturers on the internet. Some notable British gun makers include Ezekiel Baker (1758-1836), Henry Nock (1772), Charles William Lancaster (1820-1878) and James Paris Lee (1931-1904) responsible for the Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield designs. Best places to buy or sell antique weapons would be specialist auctions both local and online. Internet auctions such as eBay.com provide the biggest choice and variety as it is open to the broader market of sellers and collectors. The advantage of going to an auction house for buying your arms is that it allows you to see the piece in person, as opposed to relying on photographs and descriptions for authenticity.
