Antiques as Investments While many would view seeing antiques as an investment an odd proposition,
their worth as such has been proven repeatedly. In the current economic
climate, with recovery from the recession and credit crunch still ongoing
and inflation extremely high, many are being more conservative in their
spending and less willing to buy expensive items. However, with the rarity
of antiques and zeal by collectors to continue buying them, antiques have
shown time and again that not only do they ultimately retain their value
even if there are occasional drops, but that they also typically continue
to rise in price. Buyers' Market The economic crisis has meant that many collectors are no longer able
to afford new pieces, leaving many antiques dealers desperate for sales
as items grow dust on their shelves. Auctions too have seen a downturn
and many individual collectors have found themselves in need of cash,
with no choice but to sell some of their collection. This has temporarily
created a buyers' market, allowing those with the money to purchase new
items and the ability to dictate price. Previous recessions have seen
antique prices fall, before rising to new heights after a period of recovery,
making now the perfect time for those looking to make a profit in the
antiques market to buy and sell for a profit later on. Collectors Antiques can also be a relatively safe investment due to their high demand. There are a limited number of good pieces as there is a high threshold for becoming an antique. They must survive for long periods, being well looked after, which automatically creates a scarcity, ensuring they are better able to retain their value. Also, given the enthusiasm and desire by collectors to buy more, there is always a market for their sale. Although this market may occasionally lessen as collectors run into financial problems, the desire remains, ensuring that the market ultimately recovers. Finally, unlike other investments that are intangible, such as shares and mutual funds, antiques are able to give their owner enjoyment before being sold on. Even antiques, such as tables, can be used before being sold on, provided they are well looked after.
