French Silver Gilt Flatware for Sale in the UK

Shop French silver gilt flatware and related French vermeil pieces currently listed for sale in the UK, from serving utensils and caddy spoons to small boxes and needle cases. Compare the stated metal standard, hallmarks and gilt finish, as descriptions may distinguish solid silver from silver plate or vermeil. Check dimensions, weight where provided, condition, rubbing to the gilding, dents, repairs and whether boxes or other original components are included. Always review photographs and confirm delivery costs before buying.

What to Look For

Check the listing’s measurements carefully, particularly for serving pieces, boxes and small accessories that may appear larger in photographs. Confirm whether the gilt is original, later applied or worn, and look closely at high-contact areas such as handles, bowls, rims and raised decoration. Ask for clear photographs of hallmarks, maker’s marks and any import or control marks; French silver marks can help establish the metal standard and period, but should be assessed alongside the description rather than treated as proof of authenticity. Inspect for dents, splits, thinning, repairs, solder, loose mounts and missing components. For boxed sets, verify that every piece and the original case are included, and check UK delivery, insurance and returns.

Buying Tips

When comparing French silver gilt flatware, check that each listing clearly states the number of pieces, dimensions and total weight where available. Examine photographs for worn gilding, dents, scratches, splits, loose handles and evidence of polishing or repair. Look closely at hallmarks and any maker’s or import marks, and ask for sharper images if they are unclear. Read the seller’s description for originality and completeness, then confirm postage, insurance, import charges and return terms before buying.
