What to Look For

Check that the Birmingham anchor, date letter and Joseph Gloster maker’s mark are clear and consistent with the description; worn or incomplete hallmarks can affect identification. For cigarette and card cases, ask for closed and open dimensions, weight, hinge and clasp condition, and whether the interior is clean and complete. Vesta cases should have a secure striker, sound suspension ring and an undamaged hinge. On engine-turned or gilt surfaces, inspect photographs for rubbing, dents, scratches, replating or uneven wear. Salt spoons need close views of the bowl, stem and any bends. Confirm whether measurements and weight exclude added liners, stones or fittings, and check postage protection and return terms.

Buying Tips

When comparing Joseph Gloster sterling silver, check that each listing shows clear photographs of the hallmarks, hinges, clasp, interior and any engraving. Weight and dimensions help distinguish a small vesta case from a larger cigarette or card case, while dents, splits, rubbing, replaced fittings and gilt loss can affect desirability. Read the condition description closely and ask about repairs or missing parts. Confirm postage, insurance, delivery times and the seller’s returns policy before buying.
