Parchment Manuscripts for Sale in the UK

Browse current UK listings for parchment manuscripts, from legal indentures and leases to religious texts, call-up notices and illuminated leaves. Asking prices in the examples range from modest sums for later documents to several hundred pounds for older or more decorative pieces. Compare the material described—parchment, vellum or another surface—with dimensions, date, completeness and condition. Check photographs for fading, tears, creases, staining, holes, erased writing and later repairs, and read the seller’s notes on signatures, seals, framing and provenance before buying.

What to Look For

Check whether the description identifies the material as parchment, vellum or paper, as these terms are sometimes used loosely. Ask for clear photographs of both sides, including writing, seals, endorsements, stitching, watermarks and any decoration. For legal documents, check the date, names, place, number of membranes or skins, and whether attached seals or ribbons remain. Examine for flaking, tears, holes, creases, fading, staining, trimming, insect damage and edge loss. On illuminated or religious pieces, ask whether pigment is lifting and whether any sections have been replaced or retouched. Confirm dimensions unframed and framed, mounting methods, and whether the frame or glazing is included. Request details of provenance only where documented.

Buying Tips

When comparing parchment manuscript listings, check whether the item is described as parchment, vellum, paper or a reproduction, and read the dimensions carefully. Examine photographs for flaking, staining, folds, tears, fading, trimming, worm damage and writing loss. Ask about backing, framing, repairs, restoration and whether seals, cords or other attachments remain. For illuminated or religious material, request clear close-ups of text and decoration. Confirm dispatch protection, insurance, delivery costs and the seller’s returns policy before buying.
